The benefits of using Drupal CMS
Drupal CMS. Why Drupal? Features & Specifications
Drupal is a free, open-source web development platform for online content and user communities. Drupal powers some of the busiest sites on the web, and can be adapted to virtually any visual design.
Drupal runs over 3% of the entire web, with many high-profile sites including WhiteHouse.gov, Examiner. com, MTV.co.uk and London.gov.uk. Oh and of course BAFTA.org which we recently built in a very successful collaboration with Access Advertising and The Council.
Commercial Support if Required
Although open-source it is supported by a number of commercial companies including Acquia and its partners. Acquia is a commercial open source software company providing products, services, and technical support for the open source Drupal social publishing system. Acquia’s commercially supported package is a recommended option for a website of this size.
Drupal is open
Drupal was created over ten years ago and released as open-source software under the GNU Public License. That means it’s completely free to download, use, and modify: There are no purchase, license, or maintenance fees – leaving more of your budget to invest in creativity and building your website.
Drupal is web development
Freshly installed, Drupal gives you a database-backed, multi-user web system for content management, with file maintenance tools and a high level of security. We take advantage of Drupal’s extensible archi- tecture to go far beyond the “core” package.
Drupal is social
Drupal is a multi-user system, where site visitors can log in (as “authenticated” users) or browse the site without doing so (as “anonymous” users). You can also assign authenticated users to “roles” to separate levels of permission. Great for building online social communities.
Drupal is content
Drupal both hosts and promotes your content. It appears naturally on your own site, of course, but can also reach out to give you a presence on Twitter, Facebook, and other venues. And Drupal’s built-in features improve your content’s visibility to search engines.
Drupal is built on the well-supported web technologies PHP, Apache, and MySQL. It takes advantage of a wealth of development that make them fast and unshakable – proven repeatedly in the field on million- page sites and those receiving over 20,000 requests per second.
Drupal is design
The look and feel of a Drupal site is created as a ‘theme’ - visual style is separated from content and data allowing the website to be ‘skinned’ for different devices and applications - great for mobile websites or sites requiring enhanced accessibility formatting.

“Drupal was the perfect solution for our website. It was comforting to know we were buying into something that our agency are experts in and, after our training session, something that is so very easy to use. Since our site went live, 12 months ago, we haven’t looked back. It is so quick and easy to update content on the site, add images and even add new pages. The interface is extremely user friendly and anyone who can use a PC can pick it up in no time. It’s perfect for a racecourse as there is so much to update day to day, we can dip in and out of it as we need. I’d highly recommend the system as a great solution to content management.”

An Administrator’s View
When logged in as an administrator the website is still viewable and navigable as the regular website. The administrator pages have the additional content management menu at the top and all pages have an ‘edit tab’. This makes navigating to content that needs editing very easy and familiar to non-technical users.
Easily Manage Custom Content
The use of ‘Content Types’ means we can easily add in custom page types. In this case we see ‘Event, Page, Photo Gallery, Press Article, Menu Download, Cocktails & Drinks’ Simply choose ‘add content’ from the Admin menu and populate the text fields, upload images or media to the library, these are then dynamically resized. Finally select categorisation and publication options.
Easily Control the Details
Content Fields can also be enabled to use ‘Rich-Text’ editing which gives access to a Microsoft Word / text editor style interface - allowing ease of styling, image insertion and hyper-linking.
Here we see an event being added; super simple and easy use widgets like this calendar date picker ensure a consistent user experience of front and back ends of the website.
Media Library and Social Archive
Here media content is added via the Media Library. A user can easily upload video, audio and images directly into the Library for use across the site.
The Library tab allows users to easily browse internal uploads, Social media , images and video.
